4 Cycling Safety Tips for Riding a Bike on the Road

When it comes to cycling on the road, keeping yourself safe should always be your main concern. Not only does it prevent you from being involved in a collision with other vehicles, but not following cycling safety tips puts you at risk of suffering from long-term injuries.

Road safety for cyclists

In this cycling safety guide, we’ve shared four tips that cyclists can use when riding a bike on the road, along with general road safety for cyclists to avoid the chances of being involved in a serious accident:

1. Know your route when riding a bike on the road

One of the simplest things to improve your safety when cycling on the road is to know your route before you begin riding. This is because being familiar with your surroundings allows you to become knowledgeable on certain areas that may be difficult to ride though.

For example, if you’re riding your bike on a route that you’ve never ridden before, you could come across a confusing set of crossroads and not know which lane you should be in. This may lead to you cutting across lanes and having less concentration on riding, putting you more at-risk of colliding with a car.

Before setting off, you could walk or drive along the route you’re looking to ride to avoid this from happening.

2. Wear cycling safety equipment

When learning how to stay safe cycling, one of the most important things to remember is that you must be visible to other users of the road. After all, if you’re invisible and cannot be seen by a driver, how can they avoid crashing into you?

For this reason, you should always have some form of safety equipment when riding a bike on the road. This includes a light to make yourself visible at night, a horn to alert other road users of your presence and a helmet to protect yourself against suffering from a head injury if you’re unfortunately involved in a collision.

3. Be alert when cycling on the road

When you’re riding a bike on the road, you may find that other motorists shock you by silently creep up behind your bicycle. This can take your focus away from the road and cause you to panic.

However, you can prevent this from happening by always being alert. Regularly check your mirrors and always keep an eye out for unexpected things that could cross your path, including animals, pedestrians, prams and other cyclists.

4. Make others aware of your intentions when learning how to stay safe cycling

One of the main causes of bike accidents happen when a cyclist collides with a vehicle. This can happen when you change direction, route or stop unexpectedly without making other users of the road aware of your intentions.

When sharing the road with a vehicle, always make sure that the drivers around you know what you’re doing – and that you’re there. So, if you’re wanting to turn into a junction, use the appropriate hand signal; if you’re cycling behind a large truck, leave enough space for them to see you.

Although these tips can help you to stay safe when cycling on the road, you may find yourself in a serious bike crash through no fault of your own. If this happens, remember that you are entitled to make a claim for bike crash compensation that can cover the cost of your injuries, any medical treatment you had to pay for and the cost of purchasing a new bike.
